Conscious Consumerism on The Freeschoolin' Homestead
I recently read an article bashing conscious consumerism.
Now, while I agree that it's not the end all be all of solutions, it's not something to throw to the wayside. No it doesn't stop big box companies dead in their tracks from offering toxic, environmentally unfriendly products to the planet. It doesn't send an immediate message to the corporate world about their practices. It doesn't stop all the waste that is being produced today.
A brand of chips we buy because it is GMO free and made with oils and salt we prefer.
If you're looking for a quick fix, conscious consumerism is not going to save the world tomorrow. But it makes a worthwhile difference. Small steps lead to big change.
When I go to the farmer's market instead of a big box store, when I make my own toothpaste instead of buying it, when we only buy organic products we trust, when we don't buy soda pop or eat out, it makes a statement with our buying power, which is nothing to scoff at. So we'll continue to do our little part and know that it creates ripples in the sea of change.
