đ„ Freeschoolin' Chickens Out
No, we're not scared.
We finally got chickens!
It is a goal for our family to live as sustainably as possible and a goal of Hope's to be manager of all the baby animals on our farm. This past Friday we finally began our first adventure into animal farming! Thanks to homeschooling friends of ours, we picked up 6 Rhode Island Red day old laying chicks.
We've planned on chickens for at least 3 years now, but this past year motivated us to take action. Our family has chicken handling experience from our years volunteering at Big Curve Acres, so we took easily to caring for our new little additions. It was all we could do to sleep the night before we went and got them.
They will grow fast in the weeks to come and need to go into their "chicken litter" that we are building, but for now it's so wonderful having them in the house. Hope constantly has one or many in her lap, curled into her or in her hand, sleeping. She keeps saying it's better than her biggest dreams. I can't help but feel my heart bursting with happiness for her, watching her dive into her passion.
This is facilitating unschooling. As a family we're exploring the world and everything in it, playing every day and creating to our hearts content. SUBJECTS:

This Past 2 Weeks
Aside from actually getting our chicks, we acquired all we needed and set it up in advance. It was really important to us to be as prepared as possible. We also learned that newer car batteries don't do well when you leave your car undriven for weeks at a time, so we passed the time waiting for CAA to give us a boost by exploring a nearby snowpile at the grocery store our car stopped working at.
We had dinner with our besties, the only ones in our regular bubble of contact. Our Family is starting to feel the affects of losing our community due to covid. We will be working towards creative solutions to get social so that we do not risk the demise of our mental health.
We sang songs, played Minecraft, Planet Zoo, are working on a paint project, drew and drew and drew, role-played, bought the second novel in the Five Nights of Freddie's series and worked on Hope's hair. I'll be blogging about that next week, what a journey it has been.
