🕹 Education is Among Us

Videogames get a bad rap in a lot of homeschool circles.

I know folks can think that restricting children's use is a way to keep balance with screens and the rest of life, but this does not prepare them for teen and adulthood, when they must self regulate a healthy balance all on their own. Many binge to an unhealthy level in experimentation when there is no one to impose rules on them.

So Much To Learn

If a student were obsessed with books like they are videogames, most parents wouldn't have a problem with it because they are perceived as more educational. So let's look at what you can learn from just one game.

Among Us is a popular online game where crewmates are doing maintenance tasks and one to three imposters are there to sabotage and eliminate the crewmates. There are meetings called throughout each round to discuss who are the suspected imposters are and players come from all over the world.

Jaze actually found out about Among Us and started our besties/Hope's Fairy Godparents playing. Hope had been watching Tik Toks on it and joined in as well. It wasn't long until we had a party of 7 playing all together on voice chat, including me. I can't even tell you how much fun it is and it's a really simple game. I highly recommend it, not just for the educational benefits. SUBJECTS:

Technology, Communication, Reading, Math, Decision Making, Team Work, Social Studies, Navigation, Conflict Resolution, Problem Solving, Deduction, Hand Eye Coordination, Psychology, Time Management, Self Regulation, Socialization, Community, Boundaries, Typing, Organization, Creative Thinking, So Much More...

I think instead of being afraid of videogames, we can learn from them, and how we can use them as tools instead of hindrances to education.

This Week

Our little artist (Hope) was hard at work creating the most lovely work. She draws several times a day, most days, and grows in her ability steadily. It is beautiful to watch her learn so naturally and passionately and her artwork is striking, not just for her age. Jaze and I have been hard at work on the 2nd children's book in the Freeschoolin' series, "The 1 Rule of Freeschoolin' Is There Are NO RULES to Freeschoolin!", and we are so excited about another project we are working on to celebrate the book launch, so stay tuned!

We played in the snow, walked in the forest and cared for our rescue horse, River. Our family has decided to get laying hens so we are excited to be getting chicks from another unschooling family in the next month. Can't wait to share how it goes! Hope has decided she is into bandanas and wears one every day, with her favorite stuffie friend, Slinky the Ferret, dressed to match. Jaze and Hope did every puzzle in her room as a challenge and she was so proud she took pictures of her display. We had to clean it up because Hope has been dying to have Superbed and we were finally were able to grant her request. Superbed is when we take both the beds from our double/single bunkbed and put them together in the middle of our livingroom/kitchen and watch movies on the projector at night. It's a wonderful, cozy bonding time I know Hope will remember for a lifetime. We also looked at things under our pocket microscope, played among us together as a family, watched spooky stories and Hope decided to dust all her fragile figurines.
