🎃What We Learned From Halloween
Life Is Our School!
So what did we do for, and therefore learn from, Halloween this year? We have never done traditional trick or treating as a regular thing with Hope, so she is used to creative celebrations this time of year. (And all year round. lol) Usually we dress up and attend the ghost bus experience our town puts on, check out local spooky events and have an organic candy hunt on our property. Sadly, there were no events going on this year due to covid, so we decided to get creative.
As mentioned last week, I decided to create a haunted escape trail, Hartland Horror, on our land with the help of our best friends Kevin and Sarah. Kevin is a professional escape room artist and horror event creator so we were really excited to collaborate with them. We ended up having a booking on Halloween night with beloved Homeschool friends and afterward the kids played until 2am. (1am technically due to Daylight Savings Time.) Hope actually didn't attend as she was too tired and decided to opt out to get some sleep, which we respected fully. Everyone that has run through our trail has had nothing but awesome things to say and it's been a lot of fun to put on. Thanks to all our bookings so far; you have made this such a blast!
Jaze got carving pumpkins (our attempt to grow them this year failed, lol) and Hope designed and carved hers all by herself. We ran her a candy hunt on our land through the lit trail we have for our haunted escape event where she found delicious organic treats, much to her delight.
Earlier in the week for Jaze's birthday we took a road trip to Vaughan, Ontario for a Night of Lights event we found out about through Entertain Kids On A Dime. We packed snacks and the 5 of us (thanks Sarah for driving!) and drove out for a Halloween themed light show timed with music.
We also watched lots of spooky movies and shows, roleplayed Halloween stories and made Halloween themed art. Subjects Learned
Geography, Navigation, Time Management, Patience, Bonding, Technology, Plan Making, Resource Management, Observation Skills, Adventure, Nutrition, Math, Science, Reading, Knife Skills, Design, Creative Thinking, Fear Management, Team Work, Dramatic Arts, Event Planning, Healthy Socialization, Community, Phys Ed, Strategy, Body Autonomy, Free Choice, Independence, Social Studies, Fire Safety, Nature, Survival Skills, So Much More...
With all that can be learned just from celebrating Halloween, there's no need whatsoever for school! This Week
The power went out for a few hours in the house on Sunday so we played Monopoly and lit our flameless candles all over the house. I feel badly I didn't get any pictures because it looked just beautiful in here. Next time. Hope played animal jam, spore, sims 4 with Jaze and independently, roleplayed with toys, did some Laundry with her Daddy and watched Youtube.
When life is our school, the worry that we'll learn enough is far from our heads. We're just soaking up each moment for all it's worth, allowing it to help us grow. #nevernotlearning
