Unschoolers are Tortoises!

Unschoolers are Tortoises Article Titlle Page

Why are Homeschooling and Unschooling like the Hare and Tortoise?

When it comes to home education results, people are still looking through the lens of school as a measurement. But Self Directed Learning can't be measured that way accurately. It's more like minesweeper, opening up pockets of information rapidly and sporadically as life is lived and things are discovered from passions and opportunities. The Hare With any curriculum based or involved education, there are tests, grades and goals that are outside the student's creation or control. The student must rise to the objectives the curriculum sets, not their own. It can be very easy to see that homeschooling works when students are meeting or exceeding the grades of schooled children. Stories of these students are celebrated highly.

The Tortoise Unschoolers often learn to read and/or write later than schooled or curriculum schooled students, have no grades or tests to prove progress and, because of this, a lot of skepticism to push past. Passion led learning is deep rooted and not easy to see if one is looking through the lens of school. Unschoolers tend pick up reading faster when they do decide to learn. And for the record, Unschooling has never been the reason for someone's illiteracy. Many start and run successful businesses, some even before teenhood. Talk to an Unschooler on a subject they are passionate about and they light up! It may be difficult to spot for some people, but Unschoolers are not at a disadvantage at all! They are just not learning in a linear way which is difficult to quantify in a school minded society. Now I know that the Tortoise wins the race in the story, but my reason for using this analogy was to illustrate how much unschooled education is underestimated because of the way education is measured currently in our world. In the end, there is no race. We all end up at the finish line together. This Week Our family hosted a LARP (Live Action Role Play) in the Park which was a LOT of fun. We had more players than ever of all ages ranging from around 5 to over 40. Thanks to all our awesome Un/Homeschool Club members for coming out! 🍀 We were invited to help out on a wonderful homeschool friend's certified organic farm to pick red clover and enjoy the most delicious meal together. Such a beautiful family at the core of Earth Valley Organics. They not only grow incredible, organic bounty but they share freely and are dedicated to building community. We played with homeschool friends, learned so much and enjoyed one another's excellent company. We are organizing an tour of their farm so if you're local, feel free to sign up and JOIN US! 🐎 Hope has taken more of an interest in riding and caring for our rescue horse, River. River is 23 years young, a formerly abused thoroughbred from the race track. Our family is deeply intent on helping him live a long, happy senior life. He took Hope on a lovely paddock ride this past week and she led him all by herself for the first time ever. River and Hope are a great team. 🚴 We harvested some organic heirloom carrots from our no till garden and Hope learned to ride her bike WITHOUT TRAINING WHEELS!!!! She is so proud. I'll tell the whole story in the next blog called, Learning: No Teacher Necessary. 🎉 Hope's Fairy Godmother, Sarah, came to visit so we enjoyed meals together, lots of giggles and fun. Hope really enjoyed having some alone time while Jaze and I did a quick shop in town.

📚 At long last, the wait is over. Hope is learning to get reading. Just words for now but she finds it easy, the reading she does do.

Video This week was crazy so I didn't get a video uploaded but here's last week's for anyone who missed it and there are over 70 other episodes to view until our new episode of The Freeschoolin' Family comes out!
