Misunderstanding Unschooling
Real Unschooling Myths "Unschooling is no textbooks or work books." "Unschooling doesn't use books." There are many different education styles. Unschooling, however, is one of the most confusing for many people to fully understand as it takes a left turn from the feel of most other styles. Unschooling is life learning. All the traditional tools of learning are available to unschoolers. Textbooks, libraries, classes, universities, field trips, activities, projects... there are no limits. Unschooled Students chose their subject set entirely and Unschooled Parents don't teach, they inspire. There are no required subjects for Unschoolers. Not even a bit of reading or math. All subjects are delved into by the student out of their own passion and interest. Unschooling never ends. Jaze and I are always learning new things. Like self publishing, entrepreneurship, event planning, self sufficient living and so much more. Our newest project will be music recording which we are excited about. Instead of tests and grades we use our Freeschoolin' Journal to record achievements, events and daily happenings. Here's an article written in April all about it - Our Freeschoolin' Journal. We also include video, pictures, artwork and completed projects. Hoping this helps dispels some myths about Unschooling that fuel many of the misunderstandings about this education style.

Our Week We kept it low key this week but still had lots of fun. Tree climbing, campfire dinner, visit from our dearest Unschooling friends whom have shown us the deepest kindness and great support during our family's mourning and are just all around super fun folks to hang with! Hope assembled her Kiwi Krate generously donated to us and we got a really cool opportunity to do a preliminary interview for a spot on a VICE show they are doing about homeschool families. Last but not least, we hit up the Barrie Farmer's Market this past weekend for some all natural breakfast from Nicholyn Farms and were lucky enough to get serenaded by the Barrie Saxaphone Quartet finishing up their last set of the morning. Hope had never experienced live music that wasn't overwhelming so she enjoyed it thoroughly, as did we all.
