Freeschoolin' A Farm Field Trip & More!
We Love Field Trips!
Our family is all about hands on learning so we plan quite a few trips and events through The Un/Homeschool Club of Ontario. This week we had our first ever trip to Nicholyn Farms, a no spray, naturally run farm our family purchases grass-fed meat from, along with other staples we need. It's a local farm, about 15-20 minutes from our home.
On a windy and sunny Thursday afternoon, Shane, Lynda and Melissa gave our group of about 50 homeschoolers an educational tour of their farm.
We started at their farmhouse dating back to the 1800's where we learned some facts and history about the farm.
Then we moved to their adorable orchard and viewed the flowers starting to bloom.
It's early in the season so the chickens were not outside yet, but we got to view their chicken tractor; where they live outside on the farm and work/enrich the soil. There was was over 4000 bulbs of garlic popping up out of the ground and Lynda showed us her awesome weeding "machine". They hand weed everything they grow.
We were also given a tour of their amazing GeoDome where they have their very own Peach Tree! They can grow greens all year round and even have it set up with aquaponics.
Their green house was bursting with growth even though it hadn't been fully planted yet.
3 grass-fed cows took a break from their gourmet meal to say hello to our group.
We learned how to pick ( and eat ) asparagus and even got to plant our very own basil seed to take home and grow!
Afterward there was fun on a play structure and some went to the store for some Kawartha Dairy Ice Cream. We shopped for our groceries which included a jar of Adam's Honey and various cuts of frozen Chicken.
This Week
Hope decided to start using Teach Your Monster To Read and loves it so far. She also wanted to take some of her savings and buy some toys she's been wanting for a long time so we headed to Mastermind. The weather and our schedule has finally aligned so we were hard at work getting the garden ready for planting. Hope never has to help with chores but she does because she wants to be a contributing member of the household. We've been feasting on refined sugar-free chocolate iced cake for breakfast and grass-fed, organic fire roasted bannock dogs. Hope and Jaze found a brand new deck of UNO cards by the trash so we also enjoyed a few fireside games.
We've been too caught up with funeral arrangements and such to put out any videos but feel free to visit our Youtube Channel for over 65 previous episodes you might enjoy.
Thank you to all who have been so supportive and kind as we deal with the loss of my son, Hope's only sibling, Skylar .
Skylar Kenneth Everett Matthews-Jones April 16 1993 - May 17 2019. Gone too soon. Remembered Forever.
Much Love Always, Wendy
